Getting Your Bark Collar Up and Running

The most frustrating thing is getting a new product and it not working in the way you expected it to work. This can be the biggest problem with bark control collars; especially if you (and your neighbour’s) have been waiting for your bark control collar’s urgent arrival to stop your dog barking.

We rarely find a problem with any collar straight from the box or that the product is not suitable for the dog. Ninety-nine precent of calls or emails are usually due to the customer not being able to fit or place the collar on the dog correctly.

All spray bark control collars and static electric bark control collars that are vibration activated require to be fitted on the dog’s neck correctly so that the collar can pick up the vibration from the dogs bark and in the case of the static collars so that the collar can deliver the correction to the dog. Fitting to the dog’s neck in colder winter months is always harder than in the summer months due to the thicker coat.

If you require more information about fitting a bark control collar correctly please read the How to fit a bark control collar properly in the article section.

Making sure you Choose the Right Electric Dog Fence

Not all Dog Containment Systems are the Same!

Date Updated: 10 August 2010

You have an escaping dog and are looking at getting a Dog Fence - but which one? This guide has been written to help remove some of the guess work when choosing the right dog containment system for your dog. This type of dog fencing is also known as a hidden fence, an invisible dog fence, an Innotek containment fence, a PetSafe In-Ground radio fence or a SportDog Stubborn Dog Fence. These names have come about because the boundary wire can be buried, effectively making it an invisible or hidden dog fence, and in ground fence. That said, there is no need to bury the boundary wire either, it can be attached to existing fencing if that is easier. However, it is vital to choose the right dog fence with features that are going to suit your dog's temperament, as well as meeting the requirements to suit your property. To further assist with this, we have included a comparison chart in the Resources Panel at the top left of each category and product page. Now we will have a look at each of the dog fencing systems;

Innotek SD2000: This is our basic dog containment system by Innotek. It comes with a few features and can cover a property of up to 5 acres. This system and invisible dog fence collar is suited to dogs that weigh 8kg or more. However, it is important to note that this is the only collar in our range of dog fences that is not completely waterproof, it is only water resistant. The collar is powered by a 6V alkaline battery. Outside of the boundary width, there are no adjustable correction settings or anything like that. This system is should be used with medium to large dogs (not stubborn dogs), and used on residential house blocks to small acreages (additional boundary kits may be required), and there should be no water on the property that dogs can get into. Innotek SD2100: This is one of our most popular and versatile dog fence systems. The small collar is waterproof and rechargeable, and can be worn by dogs as little as 5kgs. You have the option of setting the correction levels to suit your dog; this can be adjusted to Low, Medium or high on the containment system transmitter. The strong transmitter can cover a property up to 25 acres and features battery back-up, which is ideal for areas prone to storm seasons or power failures. The Innotek Smart Dog SD-2100 Invisible Dog Fence is worth considering for most dogs and can be used on suburban house black right through to medium sized acreages (additional boundary kits may be required). PetSafe Standard Inground Radio Fence (PRF-3004W): This is the PetSafe base model dog fencing unit. In comparison to the Innotek SD2000, this is considered to be a better containment system as its collar is smaller and waterproof. In addition to this, the system can cover a property up to 10 acres in size. This dog containment system is for dogs starting from 5kg in size that have a moderate temperament. It can be used in suburbia and small to mid-sized acreage blocks (additional boundary kits may be required). For more details Click Here.

PetSafe Stubborn Dog In-Ground, Radio Dog Fence (PIG00-0007): This electric dog fence is designed for large and stubborn breeds of dog. The waterproof collar is larger than most and features a training mode and 4 levels of correction. The benefit with this is that each individual collar can be set to suit each dog, whereas in other systems, you set the level of correction across the system. This dog fencing is suited to larger dogs starting at around 15kg, particularly the working dog or stubborn dog. For more details, Click Here

SportDog Stubborn Dog Fence (SDF-100): This dog containment system is for larger dogs, stubborn dogs and larger properties. The durable collar is waterproof, features a training level and 4 levels of correction and a heavy duty buckle strap. The system comes with 300m of wire, double the amount of any other dog containment system. In addition to this, the strong transmitter comes with an in-built lightning surge protection and is capable of covering up to 100 acres (additional boundary kits may be required). For larger and more stubborn dogs, this is our most popular dog fence. For more details Click Here

PetSafe Deluxe Little Dog Inground Fence (PIC22-11868): As with many pet products, it is often hard to find products that suit and fit the smaller dog. Thanks to the PetSafe Little Dog Fence, this is no longer the case. It has the smallest collar available that is both waterproof and features 4 correction levels. This PetSafe containment system can be used on properties up to 25 acres in size (additional boundary kits may be required). This dog fencing system is ideal for the small dog from 3.5kg to 7kg, but is equally effective on larger dogs that have a timid and responsive temperament. For more details, Click Here

We receive quite a number of inquiries from people who own dogs of different sizes and temperaments, asking if they will need to have separate containment systems to suit each individual dog. Thankfully, you don't have to do this! If this is the situation you are in and you need different collars to suit your different dogs it is important to stick with the PetSafe and SportDog radio dog fences. The PetSafe and SportDog brands of dog fencing run off the same frequency, allowing the collars to be inter matched. An example of this is if you lived on some acreage and had a determined huntaway, you would purchase the SportDog Stubborn Dog Fence. Then, when another family member brings home a small Shitzhu/Maltese, you simply order the PetSafe Deluxe Little Dog Fence collar and they will work perfectly together.

If you are on a property that has no existing fencing at all (commonly referred to as "Run-Through" zones), we recommend that you look at the dog fencing systems that feature adjustable correction levels, in case you need to increase the level to match your dog's motivation to leave the property. In cases where it is a larger dog, always opt for the stubborn dog containment system.

This is a great starting point! Hopefully now it is easier to see that the different dog fence and containment systems are there to meet the demands that come with different dog breeds and circumstances. If you are still unsure about how to address your escaping dog problems, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to assisting you in selecting the best product for you and your dog.
