When choosing a bark collar, there are four things you need to consider:
1. Your Dog's Age and Health
We only recommend static electric bark collars for healthy dogs above 6 months of age. If your dog is under 6 months of age, we recommend waiting until your dog reaches 6 months of age. The reason it's important to wait until your dog is 6 months old is because by this age, your dog will be able associate the static stimulation with their barking. Young puppies may not understand that the correction is as a result of their barking and may get confused.
2. Your Dog's Size
3. Your Dog's Temperament
4. Your Dog's Environment
Multiple dog environments: If your dog is in an environment where there a multiple barking dogs, we recommend choosing a vibration activated bark collar or vibration & sound activated bark collar. This ensures there is a 0% chance of the collar being activated by another dog's barking. Sound activated collars may deliver a correction to your dog if another dog barks near the collar.
Water: If your dog likes to go swimming, you will need a waterproof bark collar. Bark collars are completely safe for use in water and in rain. Static electric collars only deliver a static electric stimulation, they do not conduct electricity.
When introducing a bark control collar to your dog, it is essential that the bark collar is properly fitted.
The correct bark collar fitting is high up on your dog's neck (just under the jaw) and adjusted tight enough so that you can't move it from side to side. Once it's in place, you'll need to wiggle the module up and down to ensure the contact probes are touching their skin.
Fitting the collar like this is the most comfortable position for your dog and ensures your dog receives the corrections during barking behaviour only. If the collar is too loose, your dog won't receive the static stimulation and the collar may deliver false corrections when your dog isn't barking.
