Electric Dog Fences - How Do They Work?
The electric dog fence is also known as a dog containment system, hidden fence, invisible dog fence and in-ground dog fence. They are all designed to keep your dog safely on your property through a containment system consisting of a transmitter, collar and wire. The transmitter sends a radio signal through the wire back to the transmitter. Your dog wears a collar that responds to the radio signal, when your dog gets too close to the dog fence the collar gives a warning tone. If your dog ignores the tone and continues towards the boundary, the dog fence collar will give a static correction. Electric Dog Fence: Commonly Asked Questions
1. How Does an Electric Dog Fence Work?
An electric dog containment system works a little differently to the farm style electric fence, and is more reliable. You plug the transmitter into a normal powerpoint, from here you run a wire around the boundary area and back to the transmitter. This wire does not carry an electrical current, instead is gives off a radio signal. Your dog wears a compatible dog fence collar, and when the collar gets within range of the radio signal it gives a warning tone, which is your dog’s cue to head back into the safety of the yard. Should your dog challenge the fence and go closer to the wire, the collar will then give a static correction until they back away from the wire. For a more detailed review, please head to our Articles Section and look for the article “Electric Dog Fences and Containment Systems”2. Which Dog Containment System is Best for My Dog?
Choosing the right electric dog fence is important, but it’s not rocket science. You need to take into account your dog’s breed, age, weight/size, their temperament. This will ensure that you get the best sized collar for your dog, with the options you require. In addition to this, the size of the boundary you want them to stay within is also an important factor when choosing a dog fence. To help explain this, please read our article, “Making Sure You Choose the Right Electric Dog Fence”.3. With the Electric Dog Fence Wire, Does it Have to be Buried?
You don’t have to bury the wire, however, if there is a gate or driveway area it is recommended to do so to protect the wire. If there are vehicles or stock crossing a gate or driveway, place the wire inside of conduit or old garden hose and bury it in that. You can leave the wire above ground (just don’t hit it with the lawn mower), or even attach it to existing fencing. If you have sheet metal fencing or colourbond fencing, please contact us for some important tips for the success of your dog containment system.
4. Is There Any Training Involved When Using a Dog Containment System?
It is vital that you complete the training outlined in the electric dog fence manual. This conditions your dog on how to respond to the warning tone of the dog fence collar, and static correction should he challenge the dog fencing. This will ensure that your dog doesn’t become afraid of venturing around the yard. The manual contains a complete training guide that is simple to follow.
5. Can My Dog Wear the Dog Fencing Collar 24/7?
Both K9 Control and the manufacturers recommend that your dog wear the dog fence collar for a maximum of 10-12 hours per day. There is an alternative to this, but let me explain the reasons behind this first. If your dog was to wear the dog containment collar over an extended period of time, he is likely to develop what is known as Pressure Narcosis, because dogs have dry skin, they can’t form a blister, instead they end up with something similar to a bed sore. Giving your dog a break from wearing the collar prevents this from occurring. However, if you have a strongly motivated dog that requires longer periods of wearing the dog fencing collar, you can use the SCG – 24Hour Surface Conductor Grid, please read up on it prior to use.
